Xcel Energy Vegetation Management is responsible for maintaining the vegetation surrounding 72,000 miles of overhead powerlines. This requires a unique blend of understanding tree biology, electrical infrastructure, environmental laws and regulations, human psychology, and much more.

Work as an entry level utility forester to support department staff in performing a variety of tasks including, but not limited to field work quality assurance / control (QA/QC) audits, answering questions from Xcel Energy customers, contractor crew observations, and performing data integrity checks and data entry in a geospatial work management system. It is likely over half of your time will be outside of the office in the field in collaboration with a department member or on individual assignments.

Participate in various departmental meetings or teams, as well as learning more of the Utility Vegetation Management industry through ride-alongs and shadowing department staff and contractor personnel in a variety of roles. Through practical operations experience and mentoring, a successful candidate will gain significant professional confidence and people skills.

This will be a summer opportunity with the potential to extend into a school semester. The candidate should be able to work up to full-time during the summer and 10-20 hrs./wk. during a school semester.

Requirements

• Must be enrolled in an accredited college or university and pursuing a degree in Forestry, Arboriculture, Biology, or related field.
• Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing and have computer experience and working knowledge of Microsoft business suite programs.
• Ideal candidate will be willing to work full-time hours during summer months.
• Will require a valid driver's licenses and personal vehicle to travel within the Twin Cities between local sites- mileage reimbursement available.
