Basic Function

Ramsey County is hiring multiple Senior Assistant Naturalists for the summer!

Duties and Responsibilities

Assist with Tamarack Nature Center’s summer day camp program. Work as a youth leader, demonstrating leadership skills while assisting campers, summer naturalists, and youth volunteers. Duties may include leading activities, games, or projects as directed by summer naturalists. Able to work and spend 75-85% of time outside, which may include canoeing and hiking. Participation in training and orientation is required.

Season and Time Commitment

Are available to work scheduled weekdays from early June 13th- August 15th.

Work hours can vary. Mainly, M-Th from 8am-5pm and F from 8am-4pm.

˜40-45hrs/week.

Off on June 19th in observance of Juneteenth.

Off on July 4th in observance of Independence Day.

Required Dates

Training: June 13th, 17th, 18th, & 20th from 8:00am-4:00pm.

Safety Training: June 16th from 8:00am-4:30pm (if you need First Aid/CPR certification) or 8:00am-12:00pm (if you already have First Aid/CPR certification).

JAN BBQ: Thursday, August 7th from 4:00-7:30pm.

Wrap Up Day: Friday, August 15th 8:00am-4:00pm.

Examples of Work Performed

Senior Assistant Naturalist - Summer Seasonal Assignment:

1. Working with ages 3 years old up to 13 years old

2. Assist summer camp naturalists in plan camp weeks with summer Naturalists

3. Prepare supplies and materials for upcoming camp week

4. Lead activities, games, and projects directed by summer Naturalists

5. Contribute to the general operation of facilities by keeping the public areas and workspaces clean and well maintained; set up and take down equipment for camp related activities and events

(The work assigned to a position in this classification may not include all possible tasks in this work and does not limit the assignment of any additional tasks in this classification. Regular attendance according to the position's management approved work schedule is required.)

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Sufficient to perform the duties.

Experience: None.


Preferred Experience: None. Preferred that applicants are excited to work with kids, demonstrate strong leadership skills, role model respective behavior to campers, and have had two years’ experience as a Junior Assistant Naturalist volunteer at Tamarack or equivalent experience.


Substitution: Equivalent combination of education and experience.

Other: Must be 16 years of age.

Exam/Screening Process Information

This is a temporary, at-will position. This position requires an open screening and selection process. All applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will be forwarded to the hiring department for further consideration on an ongoing basis until all positions have been filled.

Definition of Unclassified from the Ramsey County Personnel Act:

Subdivision 1. General. "The appointing authority may discharge employees in the unclassified service with or without cause. Employees in the unclassified service have no right to a grievance appeal from discharge or other disciplinary action under sections 383A.281 to 383A.301. An employee in an unclassified position shall not have tenure but shall be entitled to all benefits associated with tenure such as vacation leave, sick leave, health insurance, and other benefits as determined by the county board."
