Garden Assistant
Summer Camp Support
This position works in a team setting demonstrating relationship building, leadership, and flexibility skills as they assist summer naturalists and camp administration. This position involves leading before or after camp care for a small group of campers, assisting in activities led by summer naturalists, and working alongside children by creating a positive environment for them, some of whom may have special needs or need additional assistance during camp. Additional duties include small tasks assigned by administration. Able to work and spend up to 75-85% of time outside, which may include canoeing and hiking. Participation in training and orientation is required.Season and Time Commitment
Available to work scheduled weekdays from June 13th- August 15th.
Work hours can vary, M-F 7am-6pm. Mainly M-Th 7am-4:30pm or 8:30am-5:45pm and F 8am-12pm. ˜40hrs/week.
Off on June 19th in observance of Juneteenth.
Off on July 4th in observance of Independence Day.
Required Dates
Training: June 13th, 17th, 18th, & 20th from 8:00am-4:00pm.
Safety Training: June 16th from 8:00am-4:30pm (if you need First Aid/CPR certification) or 8:00am-12:00pm (if you already have First Aid/CPR certification).
JAN BBQ: Thursday, August 7th from 4:00-7:30pm.
Wrap Up Day: Friday, August 15th 8:00am-4:00pm.
Garden Assistant
Tamarack Nature Center is looking for passionate, hard-working individuals to help support & maintain our garden through sowing seeds, planting, weeding, harvesting and much more. Two part-time positions are available and will assist with summer day camp and other programming, garden volunteers and engaging guests. Both are 6-month, non-benefited, temporary positions.
Required Skills and AbilitiesWork outdoors in physically demanding conditions (heat, humidity, precipitation)
Follow/take direction; complete tasks satisfactorily
Work independently and within a team structure
Perform physical labor; bending, lifting, digging, etc.
Willingness to learn gardening and education
Communicate with supervisor and garden lead about schedule, questions, and duties
Answer questions and engage with visitors visiting the garden.
Season and Time Commitment
The garden season runs from May through October and applicants are asked to commit to the entire season.
Tuesday 8- 12,
Wednesday 8-4:30
Friday 8-4:30

Summer Camp Support:
- Work with ages 3 years old to 13 years old
- Monitor and interact with campers in before and after care
- Assist summer camp naturalists in plan camp weeks with summer Naturalists
- Prepare supplies and materials for upcoming camp week
- Lead activities, games, and projects directed by summer Naturalists
- Contribute to the general operation of facilities by keeping the public areas and work spaces clean and well maintained; set up and take down equipment for camp related activities and events
- Assistant with planning and set up of end of the summer season celebration
- Work on projects on an as need basis
Garden Assistant:- Prepare, maintain and nurture the teaching garden
- Plant, harvest, and process a variety of crops
- Weed, prune, mulch, and water vegetable and flower beds
- Use a pitchfork, wheelbarrow lawn mower and other tools to sustain the garden throughout the season
- Contribute to the general operation of facilities by keeping the public areas and workspaces clean and well maintained;
- Prepare supplies and materials for upcoming programs and events.
- Assist with interpretive and environmental education programs for all ages and audiences on garden related topics
- Assist with planting, weeding, and watering of gardens; remove invasive plant species in natural habitats; assist with minor building repairs and grounds maintenance.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: High School graduate, or equivalent. Education to include coursework equivalent to a year-long high school class in a natural science (such as biology, ecology, or environmental science) or in any combination of natural science topics.
Experience: None.
Substitution: Equivalent combination of education and experience.
Preferred Qualification: Interest in biology, ecology, environmental science, science education or similar area.
Exam/Screening Process Information

This is a temporary, at-will position. This position requires an open screening and selection process. All applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will be forwarded to the hiring department for further consideration on an ongoing basis until all positions have been filled.
Definition of Unclassified from the Ramsey County Personnel Act:
Subdivision 1. General. "The appointing authority may discharge employees in the unclassified service with or without cause. Employees in the unclassified service have no right to a grievance appeal from discharge or other disciplinary action under sections 383A.281 to 383A.301. An employee in an unclassified position shall not have tenure but shall be entitled to all benefits associated with tenure such as vacation leave, sick leave, health insurance, and other benefits as determined by the county board."
