Basic Function

Ramsey County is hiring multiple Naturalists for the summer!


The summer naturalist role focuses on educational programs centered around natural history and outdoor recreation for campers ages 3 years old to 13 years old.

Duties and Responsibilities

Design, implement, and instruct environmental education programs, including outdoor recreation and interpretation of cultural and natural history for participants between ages 3-13 in Tamarack Nature Center’s summer day camp program. Summer naturalists will work in a team setting with assistant naturalists and youth volunteers. Activities will include daily contact with guardians and supervision of small and large group activities. 75-85% of time is spent outdoors, which may include canoeing and hiking. Participation in training and orientation week is required. Perform related duties as assigned.

Season and Time Commitment

Available to work scheduled weekdays from June 13th- August 15th.

Work hours can vary. Mainly, M-Th from 8am-5pm and F from 8am-4pm.

˜40-45hrs/week.

Off on June 19th in observance of Juneteenth.

Off on July 4th in observance of Independence Day.

Required Dates

Training: June 13th, 17th, 18th, & 20th from 8:00am-4:00pm.

Safety Training: June 16th from 8:00am-4:30pm (if you need First Aid/CPR certification) or 8:00am-12:00pm (if you already have First Aid/CPR certification).

JAN BBQ: Thursday, August 7th from 4:00-7:30pm.

Wrap Up Day: Friday, August 15th 8:00am-4:00pm.

Examples of Work Performed

  1. Develop, create, prepare, implement, conduct, evaluate and remediate summer camp programs for ages 3 -13 years old using education strategies and techniques.
  2. Preparation and cleanup after each camp and prep day.
  3. Lead, mentor, and guide other summer naturalists, camp support staff, senior assistant, and junior assistant naturalist volunteers in preparing and conducting environmental education and recreation for day camps.
  4. Assist and collaborate with other staff and volunteers when they lead specialized programming.
  5. Assist in maintaining the Tamarack Nature Center’s collections and its inventory of program teaching supplies and recreation equipment.
  6. Participate in regular staff meetings and trainings in the development of the summer day camp planning.

(The work assigned to a position in this classification may not include all possible tasks in this description and does not limit the assignment of any additional tasks in this classification. Regular attendance according to the position’s management approved work schedule is required.)

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Two years of post-secondary education concentrating in Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science, Science Education or a closely related field.

Experience: One year (2080 hours) of experience developing or conducting environmental education and interpretive programs for the general public, schools and/or youth groups, working with school-age children, or performing other similar duties.

Substitutions: Equivalent combination of education and related experience.

Other: Must be 18 years of age or older.

Preferred:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science, Science Education or a closely related field.

  • Ability to teach with amphibians and reptiles.

Exam/Screening Process Information

This is a temporary, at-will position. This position requires an open screening and selection process. All applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will be forwarded to the hiring department for further consideration on an ongoing basis until all positions have been filled.

Definition of Unclassified from the Ramsey County Personnel Act:

Subdivision 1. General. "The appointing authority may discharge employees in the unclassified service with or without cause. Employees in the unclassified service have no right to a grievance appeal from discharge or other disciplinary action under sections 383A.281 to 383A.301. An employee in an unclassified position shall not have tenure but shall be entitled to all benefits associated with tenure such as vacation leave, sick leave, health insurance, and other benefits as determined by the county board."

Criminal Background Checks:
