Basic Function
We are hiring various positions for LPN including FTE of 0.6 day shift and casual positions.
Under direct supervision assist the Registered Nurse – Correctional Health in the provision of nursing services by carrying out prescribed treatments including administering medications, injections, and/or immunizations and performing various diagnostic or preventive screening tests. Works collaboratively with the on-site healthcare team and correctional personnel to perform job specific functions unique to the correctional environment and inmate population; and to perform related duties as assigned.
If an internal candidate is selected, salary will be set in accordance with the personnel rules, i.e., promotion, transfer, or voluntary reduction.

- Provide on-coming and off-going shift reports by performing emergency equipment checks and completing narcotic and sharp counts with the next shift.
- Order, administer and/or distribute prescribed medications as directed. Report and address medication issues, to include non-compliance, missed doses, patient movement, and medications not received.
- Provide direct care to patients according to treatment plans, such as but not limited to checking vital signs, monitoring blood glucose, dressing wounds, administering injections and oral medications, assisting with any activities of daily living as needed, and any other ordered treatments within scope of practice.
- Monitor the status of mental health patients, making appropriate notifications and referrals. As directed, initiate and implement care plans, to provide the safest environment for those patients who are mentally ill.
- Participate in daily healthcare unit functions not already described, such as preparing transfer summaries, collecting and processing sick call requests, packing discharge medications, and preparing for procedures.
- Clean and disinfect medical equipment, order and receive medication and supplies, and stock cabinets for oncoming shift.
- Assist with clerical duties, such as filing, data entry, appointment scheduling, faxing for records, preparing lists for patient sick calls, recording in patient charts, handling phone calls, providing basic clinic information over the phone, and completing medical records.
- Collect (which includes venipuncture), prepare, and perform designated laboratory tests, such as, but not limited to blood tests, urinalysis, and other diagnostic tests as ordered.
- Assist in the assessment of nursing needs of patients by collecting and recording data in order to identify problems, symptoms, and physical, behavioral and psychological changes.
- Assist in educating patients and reinforce the instructions of nurses in use of medications and potential side effects, special diet considerations, brace and cast care, crutch walking, dressing changes, preventive health care and home safety.
- Prepare written records and reports and update charts containing information on treatments and procedures administered to patients and observations regarding their condition.
- Consult with interdisciplinary health care team to coordinate treatment efforts for individual care plans.
- Recommend changes in patient care plans to nurses and physicians based on patient observation.
- Make immediate decisions in emergencies, summoning assistance as needed. Coordinate such decisions with on-site custody staff, prepare emergency paperwork, call report to receiving facility, and make referrals to supervisors as directed.
- Facilitate the discharge process as directed.

Education: Completion of a practical nursing program approved by the Minnesota Board of Nursing.
Experience: None
Certifications/Licensure: Current licensure as a Licensed Practical Nurse in the State of Minnesota. Current CPR/BLS certification.

The examination/screening process will consist of the following sections with each section weighted as indicated:

The Training & Experience Rating will be based on the supplemental questionnaire that you need to complete as part of your application. Please be sure to be complete in your answers and do not mark "see resume" or "see work history". Failure to clearly and completely outline your training & experience could adversely affect your examination score and rank on the eligible list for this classification.
Eligible List: The names of all applicants who pass the examination/screening process, and file a properly completed application, shall be placed on the eligible list for employment as a Licensed Practical Nurse - Correctional Health. This list will be certified to the appointing authority which may use this list to fill a vacancy. Candidates will remain on the list for three months or until hired, whichever occurs first. A notice will be sent to applicants at the time the eligible list is posted, informing them that the list has been posted and their rank on the list. The department may choose to interview any candidate on the eligible list.
Veteran's Preference: This is a classified position requiring an open, competitive selection process. Veteran's Preference points will be applied after a candidate passes the examination process. Applicants who are eligible for veteran's preference should update their veteran's DD214, and other supporting documents, and submit them as an attachment at the time of application.
