Job Description

OVERVIEW

The Senior Systems Engineer will provide support to our Chanhassen, MN Plant. The Chanhassen plant manufactures K-12 breakfast, baked biscuits, frozen baked goods, frozen cookie dough and batters, and refrigerated canned dough products.

The Senior Systems Engineer provides technical leadership and expertise in the areas of human safety, food safety, system performance, and productivity. They are also the liaison between R&D and the production floor.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

The Senior Systems Engineer will be accountable for the following:

  • Human and Food Safety
    • Understand and provide expertise for human and food safety systems as they apply to manufacturing systems.
  • Technical Knowledge
    • Demonstrate understanding of equipment functionality and key process transformations
    • Demonstrate expertise in machine, materials, methods, environment, and personnel to provide robust operating systems
    • Demonstrate and coach problem solving tools & methodologies
    • Leverage data and information systems to identify and drive decision making (performance metrics, financial information, data historian, maintenance management system).
    • Develop material balances and unit operation capability information to ensure optimal rates, parameters, and formulas.
    • Demonstrate understanding of quality metrics, analysis methods, and procedures.
  • Technical Leadership
    • Apply technical knowledge and leadership to solve problems and drive improvements on processing systems.
    • Provide leadership in application of performance metrics (data accuracy).
    • Coach and provide technical expertise on foundational systems (process centerline, basic conditions, etc.).
    • Develop and deliver technical training for various levels of the organization and serve as a resource in cross-functional platform/technology/product teams.
    • Serve as a technical liaison for the system including operations and maintenance employees, plant technical and leadership teams.
  • Productivity/Cost Savings
    • Identify and implement cost savings solutions to drive to Zero Loss. Partner with R&D, Quality, Operations, Engineering, and Maintenance to drive system improvements.
  • Product and Technology Commercialization
    • Partner with R&D and project teams on tests, trials, and new products.
  • Future State Strategy
    • Develop strategies for strategic improvements that are aligned with business needs on their systems.
    • Identify, develop, lead & execute equipment and system improvements that deliver financial and performance benefits (overuse reduction, reliability improvements)
    • Develop and champion a system vision, technical road map. and capital needs to support Long Range Plan and site transformation workstreams

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering or related degree with applicable experience or extensive relevant work experience.
  • 5 - 7 years related work experience in process and/or packaging engineering, process/system development, maintenance, or manufacturing.
  • Demonstrated technical leadership, problem-solving, decision making, trouble-shooting, communications, and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrates the ability to coach and build capability in line teams and operators/mechanics.
  • General engineering principles
  • Demonstrates ability to work with and influence diverse groups at various levels and across functions.
  • Strong ability to involve operators and mechanics in the project process.
  • Computer/technology skills (Office Suite, Maximo, and other corporate programs)

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Mechanical, Electrical, or Chemical Engineering degrees preferred.
  • Previous work experience in a similar field (Food product development experience/Laboratory experience and/or manufacturing experience)
  • Passionate around the creation of food, CPG industry, and consumer trends (both food and packaging)
  • Ability to adapt to a dynamic work environment; desire to learn new concepts quickly and apply in productive ways
  • Ability to communicate effectively and contribute to a team environment
  • Strong self-starter and holds a high regard for quality of work; ability to effectively manage multiple competing priorities
  • Good understanding of Zero Loss Culture principles.
  • A good understanding of packaging and processing systems along with working knowledge of plant manufacturing, engineering, quality, and research functions.
  • Recognized technical abilities and practical experience with capabilities in the following areas:
    • Theory/functionality of manufacturing systems and unit operations
    • Data and manufacturing performance metrics analysis
    • Continuous improvement techniques (Lean, TPM, Kaizen)
    • Loss Prioritization/Quantification and Elimination
    • Coaching and Training capability
    • Process measurement and controls to optimize system and unit operation performance
    • Mechanical aptitude
    • Problem Solving and Root Cause Analysis

Salary Range

The salary range for this position is $90100.00 - $135300.00 / Annually. At General Mills we strive for each employee's pay at any point in their career to reflect their experiences performance and skills for their current role. The salary range for this role represents the numerous factors considered in the hiring decisions including, but not limited to, educations, skills, work experience, certifictions, etc. As such, pay for the succesful candidate(s) could fall anywhere within the stated range.
