Program Description:

The Sophomore Career Exploration Internship provides outstanding undergraduate students with the opportunity to gain valuable work experience with a unique institution. Through project work assignments and professional development activities, sophomore interns are provided with both an introduction to professional life, and an understanding of the work of the New York Fed.

In addition to their daily responsibilities, sophomore interns will develop personal and professional skills to support their success in the workforce. Interns will experience a cohort-model of learning, while receiving a mentor pairing with a more experienced professional at the Bank. Sophomore interns will also have the opportunity to learn more about the Junior Summer Analyst program, which serves as a recruitment pipeline for the New York Fed’s entry-level hiring.

What We Do:

The Markets Group at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York consists of multiple business areas that fulfill a range of responsibilities, from planning and executing open market operations, monitoring and analyzing financial market developments, to managing foreign customer accounts. Through its analytical and operational areas, the Markets Group:

  • Manages the size and composition of the Federal Reserve System's balance sheet consistent with the directives and the authorization of the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC)

  • Monitors and analyzes financial market developments for key stakeholders and policymakers within the Federal Reserve System

  • Monitors and analyzes developments related to financial stability

  • Supports debt issuance and debt management on behalf of the U.S. Treasury

  • Provides foreign exchange services to the U.S. Treasury

  • Provides account services to foreign central banks, international agencies, and U.S. government agencies.

Over the course of the summer, your responsibilities could include (but are not limited to):

  • Prepare charts, tables, graphs and other supporting documentation to be used in the research and market analysis conducted by the Group

  • Support senior staff with economic and financial data analysis

  • Support the Group’s funds, securities, trading and settlement activities via the preparation and maintenance of preliminary internal reports, data entry of operations results, discrepancy resolution, and testing the implementation of new products

What we are looking for:

  • Must have an expected graduation date of Winter 2025 or Spring 2026

  • An interest in banking, finance, business, economics, or public policy with a strong academic record

  • Interpersonal and collaboration skills, including the willingness and ability to foster working relationships with a range of stakeholders

  • Written and verbal communication skills with the ability to synthesize information and explain it clearly

  • Organized and resourceful, with the ability to work as part of a team and independently

  • Ability to assimilate new information and learn new tools/systems

  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel and PowerPoint

  • Solid analytical abilities (i.e. data management and data analysis)

  • Preferred cumulative GPA: 3.0

This is a paid internship. Please note, summer housing is not provided.

Salary:

Your regular wages for the eight weeks will be paid on a semi-monthly basis and will be calculated based on an annual salary of $64,300, less applicable taxes.

Federal Reserve Bank of New York summer internships are limited to "Protected Individuals" as defined in the U.S. federal immigration law. Protected Individuals include, but are not limited to, U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, U.S. permanent residents who are not yet eligible to apply for naturalization and U.S. permanent residents who have applied for naturalization within six months of being eligible to do so. Interns must remain in the United States for certain aspects of the pre-employment & background check process, which will start approximately 6 weeks (around mid-March) prior to the first day of the internship.
